The Process

The first step is to set up an evaluation appointment.  At the initial evaluation, you’ll meet with the therapist to discuss your concerns.  The therapist will then work and play with your child, to build rapport and assess specific areas.  Based on our findings, we will tailor weekly or twice weekly sessions to fit your child’s needs.  Sometimes parents remain in the room during the therapy sessions and sometimes they wait in the waiting area.  This can be discussed once the therapist meets with you.

In-Network Insurance

We are providers (in-network) for Caresource, Bureau of Medical Handicaps (BCMH) – speech only, Medical Mutual of Ohio, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Aetna and SummaCare/Apex.

Just because we are providers, doesn’t mean that Speech or OT services will be covered.  You will need to call the phone number on the back of your card to ask the following questions:

  • Do I have coverage for speech therapy and/or occupational therapy?

  • How many visits for speech therapy and/or OT do I have per year? Is it a calendar year?

  • Do I have to meet a deductible? If so, how much is the deductible? Is there a different individual deductible for my child and a family deductible? How much of the deductible have I already met?

  • Am I responsible for a co-pay (flat fee per session) or co-insurance (percentage of the negotiated rate)?

Out-of-Network Insurance

Families with insurances for which we are not providers may be able to use out-of-network benefits. This requires you to pay the session fee up front and be reimbursed by your insurance company according to the benefits.  We will submit the paperwork for you.

Many families need to use their out-of-network benefits because they are unable to find an adequate therapist within their own insurance company, or, the therapists who are providers for their specific insurance companies are located too far away from their homes.

To find out about out-of-network insurance benefits, call the number on the back of your card and ask the following questions:

  • Do I have coverage for out-of-network speech therapy and/or occupational therapy?

  • How many visits for Speech and/or OT do I have per year? Is it a calendar year?

  • Do I have to meet a deductible? If so, how much is the deductible? Is there a different individual deductible for my child and a family deductible? How much of the deductible have I already met?

  • Am I responsible for a co-pay (flat fee per session) or co-insurance (percentage of the negotiated rate)?

*It is ultimately the client’s responsibility to find out about insurance benefits before beginning treatment. The Center for LifeSkills, Brenda Richards, and Stefanie Peck are not responsible for insurance denials.
